Ayutthaya is an extremely important province as far as the history and culture of Thailand is concerned, a fact reflected in the number of historical and cultural attractions seen in the area. Ayutthaya was originally founded in 1350 and over the next few decades developed to be the capital of the Siamese Kingdom. Ayutthaya became the second capital of Siam after Sukhothai.

Ayutthaya is 76 kilometers north of Bangkok and boasts numerous magnificent ruins. Such ruins indicate that Ayutthaya was one of Indo - China's most prosperous cities. Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya a Historical Park, a vast stretch of historical site in the heart of Ayutthaya city, has been included in UNESCO's list of world heritage since 13 December, 1991.

Geography and agriculture of Ayutthaya, covering 2,556 square Kilometers, is located in the flat river plain of the Chao Phraya river valley. The presence of the Lop Buri and Pa Sak rivers makes the province a major rice farming area. The center of the province has been called "City Island"(Koh Muang) as it is surrounded by rivers while the northern island is called "Floating Island"(Koh Loy) because several rivers flow pass the city as follows:
         1. Chao Phraya River

Wat Mahathat
This temple is typical of the Ayutthaya ruins: large crumbling stupas surrounded by low laterite walls and rows of headless Buddhas. One Buddha-head is in a tree trunk.

Wat Na Phra is worth visiting to see the black stone Buddha dating from the Mon (Dvaravati) period, as well as the principal Buddha decorated in regal attire. The building has stunning vaulted ceilings supported by ornate pineapple-shaped columns.
